Frequently Asked Questions

Why horses?
Horses are considered prey or "flight" animals and thus have a keen awareness of their surroundings at all times. They are masters at reading nonverbal cues and provide immediate feedback for how persons who interact with them are coming across. Horses are very social, with their own set of rules and social hierarchies, creating an opportunity for discussion on how this relates to each participant's experience with the world. Horses are neutral in their communcations and are very forgiving. They do not judge what difficulties a person may be experiencing, creating the possibility for a positive and healthy learning environment.

What does "change your lead" mean?
In horse terms, the lead is the horse's leg that is moving further forward in motion. To change lead is to ask the horse to swap their lead foot, and the direction that they are going in. For us, change your lead refers to encouraging people to change the things in their life that are not working for them. This could be a major life change, or simply changing or improving the way they are doing something. Either way, clients are empowered to make these decisions and find the solutions to their challenges. We provide the format to do it.

What if I don’t know anything about horses?
There is no horse experience necessary and activities are designed for those that have minimal horse experience. Many people may even be afraid of interacting with horses. Participants will always be encouraged to work at their own pace and staff will always be present during activities.

Will we be riding the horses?
No, EAGALA based equine activities are conducted 100% on the ground.

What should I wear?
Closed toed shoes and tops that will keep you protected from the sun as we will be outside. Wear clothing that is comfortable for you. Since outdoor weather if variable, we suggest dressing in layers of clothing.

Where do sessions take place?
Currently, Change Your Lead offers services in the SF Bay area. Current sites are in Woodside, (located at BOK Ranch - www.bokranch.org).

I want to find out more about EAP, can I come watch a session?
Sessions are confidential and thus, we cannot have observers during sessions. However, we offer demonstrations that are open to the public. This is a great way to learn more about this type of work and offers participatns a chance to experience it first hand.
